Mostly Music was formed by
Roger and Val Wilkes in 1991, mainly to provide day events for singers and instrumentalists, after Manchester's College of Adult Education closed in 1990. Between 1991 and 2000 we ran regular day events, covering a wide range of music but specialising in 'early' music (mainly Renaissance and early Baroque), and in sacred choral music. Distinguished guest tutors included John Rutter, Michael Brewer, Martin Bussey, Andrew Carter, Deborah Catterall, David Hill, Peter Syrus, and Jonathan Wainwright. We also ran some weekend and short residential events, and singing holidays - venues included Florence and Venice in Italy (including the Duomo in Florence and the Basilica di San Marco in Venice); Segovia, Burgos, and Compostela, and other venues in Northern Spain; the Holy Land (including recitals in Nazareth and Bethlehem), and Bordeaux in south-west France.
After a gap of several years in promoting these events and holidays, we are now actively planning occasional day and weekend courses and other music events: please read on below, and in particular click on Classes in Music Appreciation, Singing for fun classes, and early music events for further details of some of these initiatives.
In 1993 we began to write and publish study booklets, aimed principally at students and teachers of GCE Advanced Level Music, though also at serious music-lovers and others. We have now published nearly 40 such booklets, and, after a gap, others are now in preparation or are being revised. In 2003 we also began to publish music: mainly (a) original editions of sacred and secular music from the Renaissance period and (b) original choral compositions and arrangements (of folksongs and similar material), for both mixed chorus and upper voices. Please see Mostly Music Publications for further details.
Almost all of the above publications have been written, or edited, by Roger Wilkes.
For several years now, we have been involved in the mail order supply of sheet music and books on music. For further information, including about how you may be able to obtain such materials from us at highly competitive prices, please see Mail Order.
We may also be able to provide private tuition (including by correspondence), principally to those who are preparing for A Level Music, or diploma or graded theory examinations (Associated Board, etc.). If interested to learn more, please contact us.
